Watch Pilot® Lidpack® installation in action on a circular marine tank hatch. This Beldam Crossley video shows packing being positioned and fitted into the hatch recess.
Nearly 80 million barrels move by sea every day. Every hatch seal matters.

What does the Lidpack® installation video show?
The video shows an installer positioning packing at an open circular marine tank hatch and working around the recess to fit it into place. It provides a visual reference for the packing location and fitting activity around the hatch perimeter, for marine engineers, vessel operators, shipyards and maintenance teams.
This is a fitting demonstration. Use it alongside the applicable product instructions and your vessel’s approved maintenance procedures. The footage does not establish the packing grade, cargo compatibility, closure settings or a completed leak-test result.
What is Pilot® Lidpack®?
Pilot® Lidpack® is Beldam Crossley’s marine tank lid packing range. It provides a compressible seal at the tank hatch closure. Product selection depends on the cargo, operating conditions, hatch design and required packing dimensions.

Why hatch sealing matters for ocean protection
The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that world maritime oil trade averaged 79.8 million barrels per day in the first half of 2025. This oil-trade figure illustrates the scale of petroleum transport by sea; it is not a combined total for oil and all chemical cargoes. Source: EIA, World Oil Transit Chokepoints, updated March 2026.
For vessels carrying oil, naphtha and chemical cargoes, dependable containment is an important part of responsible operation. Correctly selected, installed and maintained tank hatch packing can help reduce leakage risk at the hatch closure and support cargo protection.
The packing works as part of the complete hatch assembly. Seal performance also depends on the condition of the hatch, mating surfaces, closure mechanism and checks carried out before service.
Before replacing marine tank hatch packing
1. Confirm the cargo and operating conditions
Provide the cargo name, composition where relevant, operating temperature and pressure, and any cleaning chemicals or cleaning conditions. Ask Beldam Crossley to confirm the appropriate product. A general description such as “chemical cargo” is not enough to confirm compatibility.
2. Check the packing dimensions and hatch design
Confirm the required section size, recess dimensions and hatch arrangement. Share the existing product reference, drawings and photographs where available. Avoid choosing a replacement solely by appearance.
3. Inspect the complete sealing arrangement
Follow the vessel’s safe maintenance procedure before opening or working on the hatch. Inspect the recess, mating surfaces and closure components for contamination, damage or wear. Prepare the surfaces as specified in the applicable instructions.
Lidpack® installation considerations
Use the video as a visual reference while following the product-specific fitting instructions. Confirm requirements for supplied rings or cut lengths, including joint preparation and positioning, with Beldam Crossley before fitting.
Ensure the packing is seated as specified around the recess. Follow the hatch manufacturer’s requirements for closure and compression; do not assume a universal tightening setting applies to every hatch.
After installation, complete the inspection and leak or pressure checks required by the vessel’s approved procedures before returning the hatch to service. Record the product reference, installation date and inspection results for future maintenance.

Selecting the right Lidpack® product
Explore Pilot® Lidpack® 3801L for product information relating to hydrocarbon and chemical applications, including naphtha. Confirm suitability for the exact cargo and operating conditions with Beldam Crossley before specifying a seal.
If your existing specification refers to Lidpack® 3500, read our Lidpack® 3500 replacement information and ask our team to confirm the current replacement specification.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install Pilot® Lidpack® marine tank hatch packing?
Confirm the correct product and dimensions, prepare and inspect the sealing arrangement, and fit the packing using the applicable product instructions and hatch manufacturer’s requirements. Complete the vessel’s required checks before service. The video illustrates fitting into a circular hatch recess; contact Beldam Crossley for application-specific instructions.
Does the video identify the Lidpack® grade being installed?
The grade is not established in the footage reviewed for this guide. Do not use the video alone to identify or specify a product.
Can Lidpack® be used with naphtha and chemical cargoes?
Beldam Crossley lists naphtha, hydrocarbon and chemical applications for Lidpack® 3801L. Suitability must be confirmed for the specific cargo, temperature, pressure and hatch arrangement. Contact our team with the application details.
How do I choose the correct tank hatch packing size?
Use the hatch specification and measured recess dimensions to establish the required section size. Send Beldam Crossley the dimensions, existing product reference, drawings and photographs for selection support.
Does replacing the packing guarantee a leak-free hatch?
No. The packing is one part of the hatch assembly. Correct selection and fitting, sound mating surfaces and closure components, and satisfactory inspection and testing are all necessary to assess sealing performance.
