Industrial Braid Materials

Made in Britain

Beldam Crossley engineers advanced industrial braid materials for sealing solutions that operate in some of the most demanding environments on earth. From aerospace engines and gas turbines to marine tanker hatches and industrial packing systems, our woven products are built on carefully selected fibres and metallic braids that deliver strength, resilience and long-term sealing integrity.

Across product lines including Lidpack®, Cordseal® and Pilot® packing and overbraid, material selection is critical. Each braid, core and reinforcement is chosen to withstand extreme temperatures, pressure cycling, vibration and chemical exposure—ensuring reliable sealing performance where failure is not an option.

What Are Industrial Braid Materials?

Industrial braid materials are engineered fibre and metallic constructions woven into ropes, packings and seals. Unlike conventional sealing materials, they are designed to maintain integrity under thermal expansion, mechanical movement and fluctuating operating conditions.

In high-performance applications such as turbine sealing, these materials must not only resist heat but also accommodate movement between components, preventing leakage while maintaining structural stability over repeated cycles.

As highlighted in the Pilot Cord Seal data sheet, these seals are specifically developed to reduce hot gas leakage and operate continuously at temperatures up to 1200°C while accommodating expansion between dissimilar materials.

How Materials Are Applied Across Product Lines Cordseal® (High Temperature Rope Seals)

Cordseal® products are constructed using high-temperature core fibres such as amorphous silica, protected by metallic outer braids including Inconel® and Haynes® alloys. This combination enables operation in extreme thermal environments, including aerospace and gas turbine systems.

These seals are designed to accommodate thermal expansion, resist vibration and maintain sealing integrity across repeated cycles. Their braided construction allows flexibility while maintaining strength, making them suitable for both static and dynamic sealing interfaces.

Lidpack® (Marine Hatch Sealing Systems)

Lidpack® products are engineered for marine tanker applications, where exposure to fuels, chemicals and environmental conditions is constant. The braid materials used prioritise durability, chemical resistance and long-term sealing performance.

The woven construction ensures consistent compression and recovery, allowing hatch seals to maintain integrity during loading, transport and discharge cycles. Material selection also considers resistance to hydrocarbons and aggressive cargoes, ensuring compliance and safety in marine environments.

Pilot® Packing and Overbraid

Pilot® packing solutions utilise a combination of high-performance fibres and engineered braid structures to deliver reliable sealing in pumps, valves and rotating equipment.

Overbraid systems provide reinforcement and protection, enhancing resistance to abrasion, extrusion and mechanical wear. Material combinations are selected based on duty—whether prioritising strength, flexibility, thermal resistance or chemical compatibility.

Benefits of Beldam Crossley Industrial Braid Materials

The performance of a woven sealing product is defined by its materials. By selecting and combining advanced fibres and metallic braids, Beldam Crossley delivers:

  • consistent sealing under extreme temperature and pressure
  • resistance to vibration, thermal cycling and mechanical stress
  • extended service life in aggressive environments
  • reduced leakage and improved operational efficiency
  • adaptability to complex geometries and installation conditions

These benefits are particularly critical in safety-led industries such as aerospace, marine transport and energy, where sealing failure can have significant operational and environmental consequences.

Applications

Beldam Crossley industrial braid materials are used wherever sealing performance must be maintained under demanding conditions.

In aerospace and power generation, they support turbine efficiency by reducing hot gas leakage and maintaining sealing integrity at elevated temperatures. In marine environments, they ensure secure containment of fuels and chemicals within tanker hatch systems.

Across industrial processing and heavy engineering, braided packing materials provide reliable sealing in pumps, valves and rotating equipment, where wear, pressure and chemical exposure are constant challenges.

Engineering the Right Material Combination

No single material delivers optimal performance across all conditions. The strength of Beldam Crossley’s approach lies in combining materials—pairing high-temperature fibres with metallic braids, or integrating lubricating elements into structural yarns.

This ensures each product is engineered for its specific environment, balancing flexibility, strength, thermal resistance and durability.
